The Meridian-Lauderdale County Keep America Beautiful Commission honored its volunteers, those who work to make east Mississippi a cleaner place, on Wednesday.

Guest speaker Wade Jones, President of the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation, told the organization that keeping the area clean is a major part of bringing new business and industry to Meridian.

"That's so important because when prospects visit us here, quite frankly, when new management comes to an industry to manage, it makes them feel good about us," said Jones.

Several local churches, schools, and organizations also shared $7,000 in grant money to work on beautification projects.
