The deadline for new voter registration in Mississippi was Saturday. Circuit clerks around the state have reported higher numbers registering.

Some voters were filing under their current address and others were registering for the first time.

Lauderdale County circuit clerk Donna Jill Johnson said she doesn't have a definite number of new registrants as yet. But she says her instinct is it has topped any other election year since she's been in office.

"We thought everybody had registered in March for the primary election. But we've got lots of new voters. We've got a lot of 18 year olds. We've got voters who have not voted in 40 years. And we've got people in their 70s and 80s that have never voted before," said Johnson. "The voter rolls in Lauderdale County will be increased considerably."

Voters may also cast absentee ballots now. People who will be out-of-town election day, Nov. 4, may cast an absentee ballot.
