They are cleaning up their neighborhood. Several Eastern Gardens Tenant Association members took on a cleanup effort Sunday at their apartment complex in Meridian.
"We think we just out to have a cleanup day to help our community. It's a lot of trash out here. It looks real nasty and bad," said Eastern Garden resident Annie Watson.
Residents and even children in the community say it was time to clean up the mess and pick up the trash. They were sick of seeing it scattered around the complex and they choose to do something about it. And they did it with the help of the children.
"It's a wonderful thing that we have these children wanting to keep the community clean because we want them to have a safe environment," said Eastern Garden resident Ira Donald.
"All we just asked for them to send their kids out to participate. We only got a few that sent their children and we appreciate them sending their kids out to help with the community clean up," said Eastern Gardens Tenant Association President Carol Sturdivant.
"I helped out because I don't want the community to be messy," said 11-year-old Darrin Mitchell.
"I'm helping so our community can stay clean cause I like living in a clean place," said 9-year-old Trayana Carter.
"But I think everybody, everyday should participate in keeping their yards to make Meridian look beautiful," said Watson.
And that's exactly what Joanna Hill says she does. She says a little sweeping and racking here and there really helps to keep the area clean.
"Small children, adults and all, I would encourage them to get out and keep the community clean," said Hill.
"I am very proud of the kids and they should be proud of themselves," said Donald.

I applause you E.L.you are right I see so much trash everywhere around Meridian. We should have more stories like this something positive not just negativity I don't understand why people would write such uneducated negativity on a blog for the cause of good. I don't get it just because it is the perfect neighborhood to live but it is still a community for positivity and encouragement!
There are many locations that are littered around town....and it's not just Eastern Gardens or other public housing! Take a look around you. This group that volunteered this weekend should be commended for the effort. I have seen a prominent attorney throw trash out his fancy car, so don't make out that this neighborhood is the only one that can look trashy. There's plenty of blame to go around.
Hey im cleaning my yard this weekend wanna come do a story on it. This is unbelivable, they mess it up, leave it messy 15 yrs, then WTOK wastes there time and money on a story of them finally picking up there own mess. GIVE EM A COOKIE PLEASE
