Lawmakers Approve Nissan Package

Updated: Fri 6:13 PM, Jun 21, 2002

The Mississippi House and Senate have approved a multi-million dollar incentive package for expansion at the Nissan plant in Canton.

Lawmakers approved the measure Friday during a special session.

As part of the plan, the state will provide $68 million to support the second phase of development with the Nissan project.

Local lawmakers say they are hopeful that the expansion will lead to more jobs for east Mississippi.

"The key thing is that we're adding jobs and adding more opportunities for us to get spin-offs," said Senator Videt Carmichael. "I want us in to get some of these spin-offs in East Central Mississippi."

With the expansion, Nissan will employ more than 5,300 workers.

The Madison County plant is set to open sometime in 2003.
