The Bush Administration has said it would propose to Congress that certain parts of Amtrak be privatized and the states assume more responsibility for passenger rail service. Senator Trent Lott has reservations about the plan.
"So far I don't like the looks of it very much," said Lott. "I think Congress needs to address the future of Amtrak and obviously I'm going to be talking with Mayor John Robert Smith and people like Gil Carmichael that really care a lot about the railroad system in America as well as rail passenger service and talk about the best way to deal with the future needs of Amtrak."
Time is running short. The president of Amtrak says they need a $200 million loan guarantee from Congress by next week or they may be forced to shut down.
