High-profile trial lawyer Richard Scruggs says reforms in the civil justice system are a non-issue to the average Mississippian.
Scruggs joined a panel discussion on tort reform Saturday at the Mississippi Press Association convention in Biloxi.
Scruggs, who has won millions in damages from makers of asbestos and cigarettes, says doctors are leaving the state not because they're being sued, but because of a variety of economic pressures and problems with collecting on insurance.
Doctor George McGee, president-elect of the Mississippi Medical Association, says the crisis in the medical community touches everyone.
McGee says doctors are businessmen and have united with the business community to cap jury awards in lawsuits and back other reform with the goal of lowering the high cost of malpractice insurance.
