A federal disaster declaration covering 28 Mississippi counties has been extended to cover damage from the most recent round of damaging storms and flooding.

The original declaration covered storms, tornadoes and flooding that occurred during the April 6-14 period. The extension announced Thursday involves damage later that month in the same areas.

Sen. Trent Lott said the amended declaration was for the April 15-25 period. To date, authorities say more than $5.7 million in federal and state disaster assistance has been approved under the initial declaration, which was issued by President Bush on Apr.24.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said 2,653 state residents had applied for various forms of disaster assistance.
