Newton is one step closer to getting a new hospital. The current building is 50 years old.
Earlier this spring the state granted the hospital a certificate of need to build a new facility.
Hospital officials say there's only one step left.
"We've filed our loan with the USDA's Rural Development agency. We're in that process. We've finalized all the applications and the state has already approved a significant portion of it and they are trying to get the other portion from the federal Rural Development pool. We're expecting to here from them in a couple of weeks," said hospital administrator Tim Thomas.
Construction on the new hospital is expected to begin by early fall. The facility will be located on Highway 15 between Newton and Decatur.
