It was demolition day in the city of Meridian. After a brief ceremony, crews began demolishing the former bank plus building on 8th Street and 22nd Avenue in Meridian.

It will make way for the construction of a new parking garage for downtown.

City officials say the parking garage is not just about parking. They say it will be a catalyst to economic growth and further enhance the aesthetics of the downtown area.

"This one is designed so that you can get in and out like other places and the growth that will spur up around here is going to be tremendous," said council president Mary Perry of Ward Two.

The parking project was also instrumental to the Riley-Marks Rothenberg-Opera House restoration project.
