LEWISBURG, Miss. (AP) -- Some residents of the Lewisburg community in DeSoto County want to incorporate before Olive Branch steps in to annex them.

Lewisburg is south of Olive Branch, which has already filed a plan with the chancery court to take in about 15 square miles.

Residents hope to beat Olive Branch to the punch by filing their incorporation plans in chancery court before a February court session on Olive Branch's annexation.

At least two-thirds of the 6,000 to 7,000 registered voters in the planned incorporation area must sign a petition to incorporate. Local residents collecting signatures.

Olive Branch officials have said they would oppose Lewisburg's incorporation.
