PORT GIBSON, Miss. (AP) -- The Port Gibson Police Department was open Monday, three days after a payment lapse on an insurance policy forced its closure.

Mayor Fred Reeves said the worker's compensation insurance policy for Port Gibson had been canceled because the city clerk's office neglected to pay the bill, which is $6,898 every three months. The policy has now been renewed.

Employees worked two months without coverage. Reeves said the insurance policy lapsed in October, but he did not learn about it until Friday.

No one was injured on the job during that time, the mayor said.

The Claiborne County Sheriff's Department, which has jurisdiction in Port Gibson, covered the city while the 10-employee police department was closed.
