The Meridian Police Department will soon increase its number of officers.
Police chief Benny Dubose has just sworn in nine new officers. The group will head to the training academy July 7.
Dubose told the new officers that police work may not be all they expect, but it's a very rewarding career.
"We can teach them the rules and regulations and policy, but as far as decision-making is concerned, they're going to have to make their own decisions as to what's the right thing to do," said Chief Dubose.
Dubose added that the M.P.D. also has a standing list of already-certified officers to fill a newly-created position of police officer first-class. The chief said that will result in more officers being hired within the next couple of weeks.
