Building Better Communities and People

Lauderdale County's Board of Supervisors guaranteed a possible $100,000 participation in order to seek a $700,000 federal Youth Build program grant.

Youth Build is a program that employs young people at minimum wage to build homes for low-income families.

Louis Sutton, Executive Director of United Way of east Mississippi, made the request.

"The program is to give young people skills and training. That's what it's about. The homes are simply a bonus," said Sutton. "This is a proven program across the country. The federal government is encouraging it."

The Lauderdale County application will compete with other counties across the country for the federal funding.
