A local Eagle Scout has received a $1500 scholarship from the National Eagle Scout Association.
Lenton Ray McLendon, Jr. is one of only 80 Eagle Scouts out of 1554 applicants in the nation to be chosen for this eagle scout merit scholarship.
"I was surprised. It had gotten so far into the summer, I didn't expect to hear anything," said McLendon. "When it came, it gave me a leap."
To qualify, eagle scouts must be high school seniors and have demonstrated leadership and participation in scouting.
McLendon plans to major in chemistry in college and become a teacher.
