United Blood Services said its service area has a critical need for blood donors.

In fact, officials say the entire state of Mississippi has run short of O negative, the universal blood type that anyone may receive.

UBS Monday had one pint of it available, with orders for 96 more pints in Meridian and Hattiesburg.

"We just are not able to find that blood to ship in, so that's why we're appealing to our community residents to come out and donate," said marketing specialist Heather Knight. "And if you don't know what your blood type is, come in to the center. We'll talk with you, test you, and tell you what your blood is, what type your blood is."
