The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department received an award from transportation Commissioner Dick Hall Monday.

The award recognized the use of voluntary inmate labor to clean up litter from state highway rights of way.

"Our two inmate crews last year picked up almost 24,000 bags of trash for a 12-month period. This year for six months they've already picked up 28,000. There's a serious problem in Lauderdale County with motoring public on state rights of way throwing trash," said Sollie.

According to Commissioner Hall, MDOT spends over $2 million a year, just to have litter removed from state highways.
