Artist Ronald McDowell is in Meridian working on a commissioned project for the Birmingham Public Library.
"The art community here is very alive and vibrant and I have been involved with many things here," McDowell said. "I enjoy coming to Meridian because the people here are so appreciative of my work."
McDowell says he loves to depict people in his art, especially children and senior citizens.
"I look at children as angles and I love to paint them. Also senior citizens. They are very similar to children, too," McDowell said. "Senior citizens have lived and have wisdom."
McDowell's list of accomplishments reads like a who's who list. He has
painted for the Martin Luther King family, Oprah, Michael Jackson, and Ronald Reagan.
"When other kids were outside playing, I was drawing and I wanted to learn all of these things," said McDowell.
