Teacher Gets Award for "Pigeon Project"

Oakland Heights Elementary School teacher Ronnie Shumaker has been recognized by the American Racing Pigeon Union.

Shumaker received the 2003 A.U. Publicity Award for his project involving students and homing pigeons.

"I've used chickens, pigs, rabbits, and the pigeons. Pigeons are probably one of my favorites because there's so much I can do and they're easy to keep here," said Shumaker. "And the information is real to the students. These pigeons are real to them, and it's not made up out of a textbook."

Shumaker has been using his pigeon project for two years now. Clarkdale and Newton are also involved in it. Shumaker expects to add two more schools soon.
