Meridian's Bank Plus on Highway 19 North was robbed at gunpoint around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, but thanks to a good description of the getaway vehicle, Lauderdale County sheriff's deputies were able to spot it and pursue the suspects.
After a fifteen-minute chase, the pursuit ended near Collinsville. The suspects' vehicle hit a dirt pile on Allen Swamp Road. The road has been closed due to a bridge repair in progress.
Ordered out of the vehicle, authorities say the suspects threw a bag, thought to contain the money, out the window and into a creek.
"Part of the money was lost in the creek," said Chief Deputy Mike Mitchell. "They'll be trying to retrieve it in the near future."
Both suspects were taken to local hospitals for possible injuries related to the wreck.
The "handgun" used in the robbery was actually a BB gun that looked like a pistol.
State and federal officials are handling the investigation.
