The Meridian School Board Thursday night voted to close Kate Griffin Junior High School at the end of the year.

The closing is part of the reorganizing of schools in the district.

In 2008, the board approved a plan to restructure junior high to include sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The reorganization will also affect middle schools.
Ninth graders will move to Meridian High School with completion of an addition on the campus.

The board also approved a new school calendar for the coming year. Classes will begin later, Aug. 24, 2009, and end later, June 17, 2010.

I would not be surprised to see an increase in enrollment at the private and parochial schools.

Truly, the MCT2 does seem to alert the students that school is over. Some of the children do stay home after the tests. Some schools started having awards night and fun day after the tests to try to ensure students would attend school. Going to school to the middle of June will take getting use to. This will disrupt a lot of other programs that occur during the summer. With grades having to be turned in about a week prior to the end of the nine week period, why would children still come to school?

School should end the day after MCT2, after that test is administered. We as teachers are judged on the scores from those test results. Why drag out school for another month when the students and the teachers consider their job done. I'll tell my students not to come after the MCT2 because we will be doing nothing but playing games and taking AR tests. I'm not putting in any extra effort after MCT2.
