Suspended Cuba Police Chief Chris Vaughn has pleaded not guilty to first-degree assault in the July 19 shooting of Anthony Collins, 19, after Collins allegedly killed his stepfather, Gethsemane "Pappy'' Walker, 45.
An indictment issued Sept. 23 alleged Vaughn had "intent to cause serious physical injury'' with his pistol. Vaughn, who was relieved of his duties after he was indicted, said he shot Collins in an attempt to capture him.
Defense attorney, Eric Guster of Birmingham, said his client will prove his innocence at trial.
District Attorney Greg Griggers, who asked the Alabama Bureau of Investigation to conduct a probe of the shooting, said the charge carries a penalty of two to 20 years in prison if convicted.
No trial date was immediately set. Sumter County Sheriff Johnny Hatter's office has taken over the policing of the Cuba area.
