Meridian Community College celebrated a new addition to its programs Wednesday. MCC cut the ribbon to mark the official opening of a new, state-of-the-art school of cosmetology. Classes are currently underway.
"We started this program way back in the fall and early spring of 2003," said Shirley Nell Goodman, vice-president of Workforce Education at MCC. "We needed this program because of all the plant closings in Meridian and many people are out of jobs and we needed some short term training programs that didn't take two years to complete."
The cosmetology program is a twelve-month curriculum. Students may enter in August and have completed their coursework by the end of July.
The students have been practicing on mannequins, as well as student and faculty volunteers. In November, the school will open its doors to the general public. Basic haircuts start at under $5.00.
