New DUI Law Goes into Effect

At midnight Monday, the state's DUI law reduces the level of blood alcohol necessary for conviction on a DUI charge.

Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie says lowering the blood alcohol will affect a number of drinking drivers who up to now couldn't be convicted.

Sollie says the change has been needed and wanted by law enforcement agencies.

"Many entities around the state have been trying to get the state to lower the blood alcohol level from 1.0 to 0.8," Sollie said.

The Sheriff said experiences with fatal accidents has convinced him the change is necessary.
