A landslide in Choctaw County, Ala., is threatening a road. No one was hurt, but the damage it caused could be long lasting.
Rural mail carrier Carla Hearn said the condition of Ararat Road, just south of Butler, is the worst she has seen.
"I've been told by a lot of people, even those older than me, this is the worst one they've seen in Choctaw County, most especially right on the edge of the road," said District 4 county commissioner Henry Lovette.
Pink flags indicate where the road starts and the landslide began. County officials estimate that the landslide shaved away about 200 feet of land from the shoulder of the road. It happened around midday. Officials say they are thankful that no one was hurt.
"The first thing when you walk up there, you might say put some dirt in it. That's the first thing, but when you put it in there it's not really going to do any good," said Lovette. "It's going to be a waste of material, time and money because it's going to go further downhill."
Before any dirt can be put in place and any repairs made, Lovette says the stretch of land must first be stabilized. To find out how best to do this, he says officials with Alabama's Natural Resource Conservation have been called in to survey the damage.
"If we can't stabilize this road and put some dirt in it that will stay there, yes ma'am, we may have to move this road," Lovette said.
Lovette said in the meantime the road will remain open for one-lane traffic, unless conditions get worse and then that area will be closed to traffic completely.
