63-year-old volunteer firefighter George Wimberly, died while en route to a fire Wednesday.

Emergency responders first received the fire call just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. It involved a blaze at a vacant house on Priester Road.

About five minutes after the first call, firefighters were alerted to a medical emergency. It involved Wimberly, a 10-year department veteran.

Officials say Wimberly was traveling southbound on Highway 513, less than a mile from the fire and less than half a mile from where he lived, when he is thought to have had a heart attack, causing his vehicle to come to a slow rolling stop in a convenience store parking lot.

"Some of the witnesses said that when he came by he was just slumped over the steering wheel. His truck came to a rolling stop in the service station," said Stonewall Volunteer Fire Department Chief Shane Harper.

From the time a firefighter is placed on alert to respond to a call, he or she is on duty. Since Wimberly died while on the way to the scene, investigators say someone could face charges related to his death.

"It could be a manslaughter charge," said Clarke County Sheriff Todd Kemp. "If arson is proven in this case or if any type of drug manufacturing was going on here at this residence."

The state fire marshal's office is investigating. Sheriff Kemp said the results of that will be used to determine whether or not charges will be filed.

I hope they through the book at whoever started this fire. Our community lost a great man. A man who served his community. If other firefighters were in the house when the explosion happened there could have been even greater loss of life. Just another example of how addiction to drugs ruins lives.

I think you misread. They said - if the case is proven to be arson or related to drug activity, then someone could be charged with manslaughter. There was an explosion in the home that started the fire, plus they had already ran off some people that were in the house earlier in the week.
