Authorities say a Forest, Miss., man drowned at Okatibbee Reservoir last Sunday. Emergency responders were around 11 p.m.
"Firemen attempted to locate him as best as they could with the equipment they had at that time," said Lauderdale County Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun.
After about two hours of searching, the victim's body was found off the shore of Gin Creek Landing. According to investigators the man had been parked along the edge of the landing.
'It appears these two individuals were inside the pickup truck on the ramp. They had been fishing. The truck was not running at the time," said Calhoun. "It was knocked into neutral and it was a standard truck and they were unable to get it stopped prior to it entering the water. And they exited the vehicle according to our witness. She was able to get to the side of the landing and get out of the water; the male was not."
According to authorities, the victim's body was discovered submerged underwater about five feet away from the vehicle.
According to Calhoun the 30-year-old was found 75 feet away from the shore and about 12 feet under water. Investigators say the victim was not a good swimmer.
The female passenger was able to escape and walk several yards away to nearby Centerhill / Martin Road where she flagged a motorist down for help.
"At this time there is no evidence of foul play," said Calhoun. "However, with it being a death investigation, all aspects will be looked into and a determination will be made in the future."
He said the passenger was treated for what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.
Investigators are awaiting autopsy results before releasing the identity of the victim.
