New Laws in Effect

Justice Court Judge Robbie Robinson has a message for anyone thinking of getting behind the wheel of a car after they've had a few drinks this weekend. Starting Monday, the Blood-Alcohol-Content for a legally impaired driver drops from 0.1 percent to 0.08 percent.

"These new laws go into effect on July 1," said Robinson. "You have the Fourth of July holiday coming up, and anyone that's caught during that time will be prosecuted under the new law."

Mississippi is one of the last states to drop the BAC of a driver to 0.08. Robinson says the decision is a no-brainer.

"Anytime you can keep the impaired driver off of the road, I feel that you have done a great service to humanity," Robinson said. "The new Blood Alcohol Content is getting the most publicity, but it isn't the only new law. From bioterrorism bills to handicap parking stickers, over 500 new bills were passed in the last legislative session."

One of the new bills calls for harsher punishments for those who call in false bomb threats.
