Two Lauderdale County jail detention officers are recovering from injuries sustained Monday morning when an inmate allegedly attacked them.

Major Doris Callahan said Corporal Crowell was attempting to get inmate Willie James Hall back into his cell.

"He refused to go back into his cell," said Callahan. "He took a ball point pen and started swinging towards her and striking at her and forced her to fall. She busted her head on the stairwell in the pod."

Crowell is at home with a severe head injury. Officer Henry Shaffer, who came to her aid, suffered a dislocated shoulder in the scuffle.

Hall faces a potential aggravated assault charge.
