Tuesday was the last election, literally, for circuit clerk Blanche Clay in Kemper County. Clay chose not to run this year, after serving almost 20 years in the office.
Clay is also retiring a few months early, effective Thursday.
"I just want to go home and I want to, at my leisure, have flowers in my yard and be able to go on trips and visit," said Clay. "Go see people in the nursing homes and hospitals that I haven't been able to do because I've been so busy. I just want to do some things that I would enjoy."
By an order of the board of supervisors, Clay's deputy clerk, Roma Allen, will fill her unexpired term.
Allen is also a candidate for the position. She'll meet Wanda Dansby in the Nov. 4 general election.
