The Meridian School Board decided Monday night to close Witherspoon Elementary.

School officials say students will be split and assigned to Parkview and Crestwood elementary schools. Faculty and staff will be absorbed throughout the district.

Witherspoon is the district's oldest facility. It was built in 1888.

But city council president Mary Perry, a retired educator, said earlier that she feels a school needs to be maintained in the community.
