Alcorn State University has eliminated 60 positions, including faculty whose contracts were not renewed for the 2009/2010 school year.
Alcorn State spokesman Stephen McDaniel said faculty and staff were cut from the Lorman, Natchez and Vicksburg campuses. He did not say how many faculty positions were eliminated Wednesday.
McDaniel said financial cuts on the state level contributed to the school's actions.
He says the university's $61 million budget was cut by no less than 5 percent in the past year.
McDaniel said more cuts may be announced soon. He said the university has no intention to, nor has it discussed, closing any of the school's three campuses.
