Mississippi transportation commissioner Dick Hall delivered $1500 checks to area community college students.
John Allen Byrd of Carthage is a freshman at Meridian Community College. He won the scholarship from the Department of Transportation, one of ten awarded by MDOT, to pursue a degree in civil engineering.
"During a recent conversation with the dean of engineering at Mississippi State University, he informed us that they're just not graduating engineers fast enough to be absorbed into the community," said Hall." There's more demand than there is supply. So the Mississippi Department of Transportation in an attempt to do something about it, has given ten scholarships this year to community college students that intend to go on to senior college and take some transportation-related subjects, such as engineering."
Hall earlier presented $1500 checks to East Central Community College students, Miranda Kay Cooper and James Patrick Burke.
