Alabama's Department of Education has received an additional appropriation from the federal government. Senator Jeff Sessions announced a $90 million budget increase on July 3.
Much of it comes from the Bush administration's ''No Child Left Behind'' Education Reform Bill.
"We want to have increased learning," Sessions said. "The goal is not to increase bureaucracy. The goal is not to increase paperwork. The goal is not to do anything but do whatever we can as smart as we can to enhance those magical moments in a classroom when a teacher and a child come together and learning occurs."
The state's Title I programs will get $18 million to provide education assistance to disadvantaged students. Another $18 million will be earmarked for increasing teacher quality in the state.
