Monday marked the first official day of work for newly-elected mayors in Mississippi.

Meridian Mayor Cheri Barry was sworn in July 2, and said she has already been working. Barry was at work Monday, even though it's a state and federal holiday.

She was getting her office ready and meeting with some who could be about to fill leadership posts in her administration. At Barry's first city council meeting Tuesday, she will be looking to confirm the new chief administrative officers, as well as the new city attorney for Meridian.

Barry would not disclose her choices Monday, since the people have not yet been confirmed by the city council.

"I think this community is going to be really excited. We've got some new blood coming in," said Barry. "These are two positions that are currently not filled. As you know, Bourdeaux and Jones will no longer be representing the city because my husband is a part of that firm. Also, Ken Storms has retired. These are two positions that will be open, and I am just thrilled to have the opportunity to work with these gentlemen in these positions that will help run this city."

Barry said during her campaign that she wants to bring about changes that will help Meridian grow and develop. One of the ideas she has is to make citizens of Meridian proud of the city.

"I think if we give ownership back to the people, you'll see changes made," said Barry. "You'll see streets cleaned up. You'll see property owners taking pride in their property."

And how does she plan to do that?

"We are going to take charge. We are going to make sure that this community runs very smoothly and that the people of this community have an active voice," Barry said.

RedLine Citizen, Have you ever had the thought that you could be a part of the issue of Meridian being divided? Nothing personal, just based on your posts.
