Drivers who traveled by cars, trucks, SUVs, and RVs for the July 4th weekend enjoyed considerably lower gas prices.

Nationwide, a gallon of unleaded gas averages about $2.59. In Mississippi, that average is about $2.44. That's actually a few pennies down from last week.

Last year at this same time, the price was around $4.00 a gallon around the nation.

Travelers passing through Meridian Monday from long road trips say paying less at the pump was a huge incentive for them to get away.

"It's way lower than what it was last summer, so I'm happy with it," said a man who identified himself only as Henry.

"It varies from like $2.30 to $2.40. I mean, the most I seen was like $2.50 and that works for me," said Julian Staples.

Travelers in and around Meridian spotted gas as low as $2.34 a gallon.

Average Prices Per Gallon:
Mississippi - $2.45
Alabama - $2.48
United States - $2.59
