Bush to Campaign for Riley

President Bush's scheduled July 15 visit to Birmingham is expected to be a financial windfall for Congressman Bob Riley's campaign for governor.

Tickets to the Republican fund-raiser are going for $1,000 each. Bush will headline an invitation-only luncheon at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex.

Riley's "Salute to George W. Bush" could draw more than 2,000 donors who will pay a minimum of $1,000 each.

Tables closer to the front are going for $50,000 -- or $5,000 a seat. That's according to state Senator Jabo Waggoner, who is among those invited.

Organizers say the Bush visit, coming early in the campaign, is aimed at helping Riley catch up with Democratic Governor Siegelman's fund-raising, which has allowed Siegelman to bank more than $4 million.

Siegelman campaign spokesman Rip Andrews said Riley opposes an education lottery in Alabama, but Bush supported using lottery funds for education as Texas governor.
