BellSouth customers will see a $1 increase on their monthly phone bills. Last month the Federal Communications Commission approved the hike in local phone fees to connect long-distance calls.

The FCC agreed to allow BellSouth and other Baby Bells raise the federal subscriber line charge.

The monthly charges rises to $6 monthly for residential and business customers with a single phone line. If you have extra phone lines -- the fee rises to $7 a month for each
additional line.

BellSouth said the increase is expected to generate about $15 million a month in the company's nine-state region.

The charge helps to pay for equipment used to deliver telephone service from BellSouth central offices to subscribers' homes. Consumer groups, who opposed the additional fee said the increase comes at a time when long-distance companies recorded a drop in long-distance traffic.
