The Meridian High School 9th grade wing won't be ready when students start school August 27.
Superintendent Charlie Kent says workers need about two months to finish the building and that means Kate Griffin Junior High will reopen to house these ninth grade students, after closing its doors this past school year.
"That would give us time to clean up and accept the building, do all the check off and all of the things we end to do so we can have the building ready to go," said superintendent Charlie Kent.
KG was the fall back plan in case things didn't pan out, so Kent says the building is pretty much still intact and ready for the first day of class.
"We left the furniture in the building; that was our plan B," he said.
Kent says there were several construction issues and rainy days that halted work and crews are still trying to catch up. But Kent says there is much progress.
"They're working on the inside right now," said the superintendent. "It's bricked on the outside, if you ride by there. And the parking lot is also coming along."
This summer several schools are undergoing renovations, but Kent says all other schools will be ready August 27m including Parkview Elementary School which suffered major damage from an arson.

There needs to be a police officer located on the KG campus when school begins. The west side and the east side are going to attend school on east side turf. Now you may not take this seriously, but I as a teacher want to LIVE!!! Frankly, I do not believe the idividuals at CO have any concept concerning a safe and secure learning environment.
After reading online, most of the articles about starting high school later point to research done by CARER (Center for Applied Research and Educational Research) in two Minneapolis school districts. Read their articles carefully and look at the reports on their web site - they did NOT find significant improvement in student performance. Most of the parents surveyed who liked the change said it was because it made it easier for their children to get ready in the morning. CARER should have offered comparisons before and after the change to show quantitative differences in performance, discipline, tardies, and attendence. There were only vague references to improvement. The teacher surveys showed that they were usually about 50% for and 50% against on every question related to the change. Most said it affected their personal lives. There is no research to show how it affected the elementary students educationally or emotionally. CARER said classes about sleep for students were essential.
You better buy a flashlight. When the time changes, we will find ourselves getting out at "dark thirty." I guess the research shows that older students like to be out late too. Good thinking. All of this information can be found in the Elephant Study-2001. Very up-to-date. "Gosh, Elly Mae! I think I see cement ponds in them thar hills!"
