Man Shoots Wife, Then Self

Police say a Meridian man killed himself after shooting and wounding his estranged wife Wednesday morning on 25th Avenue at 11th Street.

Assistant Police Chief Keith McCary said James Short, 43, shot Susie Short in the head around 8:11 a.m. as she sat in a parked car, then sped off.

McCary said Short took his own life after returning to his home. The weapon believed used in both incidents was recovered.

Susie Short worked for Meridian obstetrician, Dr. Ronnye Purvis, whose office is located on 25th Avenue. She was listed in critical condition at an area hospital. Mrs. Short's next of kin, her eldest son stationed now in Kuwait, is being flown home by the American Red Cross.

Dr. Purvis released a written statement.

"My staff and I are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Susie Short is a licensed professional who has been an integral part of the Purvis Clinic for more than ten years. She is a generous, warm and beautiful person who is much loved by the patients and us. It is so sad that this domestic dispute led to this tragedy. Our office will be closed (Wednesday). Meanwhile, we ask the community to pray for Susie and her two children at this difficult time."

The Purvis Clinic will resume normal hours Thursday, Dec. 4.
