Autry's Contract Extended

Meridian Public Schools has a new superintendent for at least an additional year, while the school board searches for a permanent leader.

Sylvia Autry was also named superintendent of Meridian Public Schools Tuesday. The word "interim" was removed from her title. She was originally signed for a one-year contract.

Autry, who had planned to retire after the 2003-2004 school year, has been interim superintendent since July 1. She says she is pleased with the contract extension.

Fred Wile, school board president, said the board will resume its search for a new superintendent at the end of next year.

The superintendent's job became available when former superintendent Dr. Janet McLin retired earlier this year.
