Due to the injuries Susie Short suffered from a gunshot wound Wednesday morning, she was placed on life support at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center for much of the day. Sadly, at 4:12 p.m. her brain stopped functioning and she was declared dead.
But the hospital kept her on a life support system for organ donor purposes.
As Lauderdale County deputy coroner Clayton Cobler explained, that's where the misinformation arose.
"MORA or the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency, notified Anderson's Hospital she was not a candidate for organ donation. So at that time she was taken off the respirator. A lot of people think that once they're taken off the respirator that's when a person is declared dead, but it's actually at brain death and that was at 4:12 p.m. (Wednesday)."
No funeral arrangements have yet been made available. Mrs. Short was 39 years old and leaves behind two children.
