Former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore filed notice Wednesday morning that he is appealing his removal from office.
The judge was ousted for failing to comply with a federal order to remove a Ten Commandments monument he placed in Alabama's state judicial building.
Moore also filed motions with the state Supreme Court asking that acting Chief Justice Gorman Houston step down from hearing Moore's appeal.
Houston has said previously that he sees no reason why he should not hear Moore's appeal.
Moore is the first chief justice in Alabama history to be removed from office for ethics violations.
