A Louisiana man was trapped for approximately four hours Thursday following a 4-wheeler accident along the Oaktuppa Creek in Choctaw County, Ala.

Gilbertown police first received the emergency call about the incident around 10 a.m.

"They called dispatch and said they were approximately two to three miles up the creek," said Gilbertown Police Chief Tom Abate.

Abate says there were about seven or 8 individuals riding four wheelers in a group.

"We were just riding four-wheelers and he was going to go up under a tree and the four-wheeler was too high, this one here, and he was going to go up a bank and it just turned over on him," said Stacey Stafford, a relative of the victim.

According to officials, the area where the 20-year-old man was trapped was so remote that it took them two hours just to get to him and another two hours to get him out. He suffered a broken leg and hip. Several ATVs were flooded out trying to reach the victim. He was brought to a Meridian hospital.

Due to stormy weather conditions, medical helicopters were initially unable to assist in the effort, but around 1:30 p.m., an Alabama Highway Patrol helicopter was able to respond and airlift the victim to safety.
