Bioterrorism Workshop

The men and women at Wednesday's bioterrorism workshop were from around East Mississippi, and they were responding to a mock small pox outbreak. They were trying to figure out what they would do if the disease came to their city or county. What they learned is that it would not be easy.

"We're not very well prepared," said Dr. Margeret Morrisson of the Mississippi Department of Health. "We'd muddle through somehow, but that's about it."

The exercise is one of a series of bioterrorism workshops being held around the state by the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. MEMA officials say its especially important following the events of Sept. 11, and the anthrax scare that followed later last year.

MEMA plans to hold a mock exercises next year, using real people and different sites across the state.
