A Lauderdale County family is without a home after a fire late Monday night.
It happened at around 10:30 p.m. on Briarwood Road near Northeast High School. The blaze was fully involved when firefighters arrived.
"In talking with the homeowner, he had his child in one part of the house playing, while he was working in another part of the house," said Clarence Butler, Lauderdale County fire coordinator. "And the child was playing with matches. That apparently started the fire."
The family lost everything in the fire. The Red Cross Key Chapter is involved in relief efforts for the family and others affected by fire.
Officials say single family house fires have a tendency to increase during this time of year.
