JSU Expansion Opposed

Jackson State University is trying to take 10 to 15 pieces of property through eminent domain for its expansion.

But three of the buildings in the university's plan have received tentative historic designations from the city and the state and include sites of civil rights meetings and speeches by Martin Luther King, Jr. and others.

University president Ronald Mason Junior says JSU is interested in preserving history, but wants to restore vibrancy to a decaying neighborhood. The plan is expected to take several years and cost about $120 million.
