There are some major money woes in York, Ala. Officials say the problem is many residents are not paying their bills and leaving the town to pick up the tab.
"If you have a service, you've got to pay for it," said York Mayor Glenda Dubose.
Dubose says a number of unpaid utility bills by residents in York is now leaving the town to face a debt equally almost a half million dollars.
"That's a lot of money. The city has lost a lot of revenue," Dubose said. "We don't have what we used to have. It's hard. It's very, very hard. The last statement I looked at was July, a printed statement. $140,000 was spent then, but only $40,000 came in and that's not good. That is not good at all."
Within the last two weeks, Dubose said notices have been sent to residents. It states that they have seven days after receiving the letter to contact City Hall and make arrangements to pay, or else face the consequences.
"Some of the bills are very, very high, as high as $6,000," said Mayor Dubose. "The ones that do not make contact with us, we're going to turn them off. The people who are contacting us, we're working out arrangements. I'm optimistic. We're going to do what we can. Other people are going to have to suffer along with us if they don't pay the debt."

Let there be no mistake who's fault this is... as Mayor Dubose has said herself many times..."I'm in charge."
For the past 10 years York has NOT had any employees capable of running a city - and they still don't.
I don't understand this, what kind of bills go unpaid for this long and this amount of money? Only thing I could think of was water and sewer that you pay the city. They don't have a cut off date and live by that date? Here if you don't pay by the month they will cut you off no matter what.
