New Study: Mississippi Children Obese

An alarming number of Mississippi’s children and youth are falling victim to obesity according to a new study at the University of Southern Mississippi.

The survey found nearly 27 percent of first graders were overweight and by eighth grade that percent rose to more than four out of every ten students.

"Its good to remind parents and educators about preventative measure like healthy eating and exercise to help alleviate this problem," said Dr. Nancy Speed a professor at USM.

The study was a first of its kind in the nation because it looked at the problem in elementary students. Obesity is considered by doctors a leading health crisis in America.
