TB a Concern for County Jails

Preventing tuberculosis among inmates is a concern for Lauderdale County.

Mike Holcombe of the State Health Department Thursday recommended preventative changes that should be made to the county jail.

"That would be an isolation room that could have negative pressure, which means no air escapes from that room," said Holcombe. "And the air from the room exhausts to the outside. It's not brought back into the building where other people can share it. And the second thing, you can supplement that ventilation with ultra-violet radiation, germicidal radiation."

Holcombe told the supervisors these changes would save money in the long run, since a TB outbreak could produce large medical bills for the county.
