Investigation into Dam Break Continues

More than 70 south Mississippi homes were destroyed and several roads were flooded Friday when a dam burst. The dam held back the 1,100 Big Bay Lake.

Gov. Haley Barbour declared a state of emergency for Marion and Lamar Counties.

Emergency Management District Director James Smith said no injuries have been reported, but that property loss is likely to be substantial.

Authorities said search crews were working in areas below the dam that is located west of Purvis. They also say an engineer was allegedly surveying a leak just hours before the break.

Barbour, in a statement, said all necessary state resources had been mobilized to assist local officials and residents.

Lamar County officials said that in addition to the flood damage done to homes, several mobile homes were moved from their foundations by the rushing water.

Officials said MEMA's mobile operations command post had been moved into the area to help coordinate state assistance.
